FAQs
-
An artwork appraisal is a technical-scientific process conducted by a credentialed specialist to verify the authenticity, authorship, and provenance of a piece. It is required in situations such as: buying or selling artworks, estate and inheritance proceedings, insurance contracting, donations to cultural institutions, legal disputes, and the international export of cultural property. Givoa has been conducting appraisals using international methodology since 2012, issuing technical opinions with legal and commercial validity.
-
An authenticity appraisal determines whether a work was created by the attributed artist, examining contextual, stylistic, documentary, technical, and material aspects. A commercial valuation, on the other hand, determines the monetary value of the work for purposes of buying, selling, insurance, or estate distribution. These are complementary but distinct services. Givoa offers both services independently and without conflict of interest, acting as an impartial third party.
-
The process begins with initial contact via WhatsApp or email, where the client describes the artwork and their objectives (sale, insurance, inventory, etc.). The Givoa team then analyzes the available documentation, prepares a customized quote, conducts a physical inspection of the piece, and — when necessary — engages scientific analyses at a partner laboratory, such as XRF spectrometry, Raman, FTIR, radiography, and multispectral photography. The result is a detailed technical report with a conclusion signed by a credentialed expert. The work is carried out at the client's premises or at a partner laboratory, depending on the need.
-
Detecting forgeries involves multiple layers of analysis: visual and stylistic examination (line, palette, technique, pinatology), documentary analysis of provenance (collector history, exhibitions, auctions), graphological analysis of the signature, and — in more complex cases — scientific analysis of materials (pigments, supports, varnishes). Works by Brazilian artists frequently targeted by forgers — such as Di Cavalcanti, Portinari, and Tarsila do Amaral — require specialized expertise. Givoa has proven experience in internationally recognized authentication projects, including works by Sergio Camargo, Emiliano Di Cavalcanti, and Oswaldo Goeldi.

Yes. Givoa Art Consulting operates globally, with offices in São Paulo (Brazil) and Buenos Aires (Argentina), and with teams in countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Italy, Portugal, and Colombia. Services are provided in Portuguese, Spanish, and English. For artworks located outside the aforementioned countries, the team can conduct the appraisal remotely or travel on-site depending on the nature of the project.
-
In estate and inheritance proceedings, artworks must be appraised by an independent specialist to determine their market value based on recognized methodologies. Givoa issues specific patrimony valuation reports for this purpose, including the documentation required for judicial or extrajudicial proceedings. Acting as an impartial third party — with no ties to galleries or auction houses — ensures the objectivity required in these contexts. The first step is to get in touch describing the artworks and the purpose of the appraisal.
